Definitely Sam, I think it's that important that it could make or break a show or a film. The importance of the Hulk-Out music/effects for example.

This is turning into a "praise chorus" for soundtracks, but it's still important.
"Returns" would've been an "A" project all around if it only had that soundtrack it so richly deserves.
This is a problem with many otherwise fine works. For example, contrast the "modern" star Treks with the "classic" episodes from the 60s. The "old school" Treks definitely have better music all around-the newer ones have more "generic" action music in the background of their various episodes, with certain exceptions. One of the great things about "Best of Both Worlds" (TNG) is the superior soundtrack the two parter was given. With the Next Generation movies, First Contact stands out, partly because of the movie's outstanding score.
Now, the Stargate series has gotten better and better with its soundtracks for the three series. By the time of Stargate: Universe, nearly each & every episode has a soundtrack worthy of a great movie. (Yes, this is a plug for the late, great series).
Battlestar: Galactica (original) always had great, epic music throughout each episode, although much was reused from its Pilot. In the newer one, each episode had its own background music and it was almost always really good! The only piece I don't like from that series is its opening theme-they should've stuck with the revamped Original BSG theme, aka "The Colonial Anthem".
