In "Guilt, Models and Murder" and Prometheus, the Hulk went beyond his physical limits through a visceral sense of determination and/or rage.

The lack of restarint was part of it, but I think the adrenaline and sense of focus simply redirects the strength that it is already there. I think this is true in both the comics and tv version.I don't think the added strength is a magical or mystical - it's not created in a "vacuum", so to speak. I think that the Hulk, especially int he comics, displayed an almost unlimited amt. of strength because his rage is almost limitless. Maybe the anger has an influence over the gamma levels or how they react with his cells, but I think the anger is mainly a focal point for his strength. It's similar to how a weight lifter will go into a trance before lifing a heavy weight. It might not be anger- but there is definitely an intensity there that focuses their concentration and taps into their strength. In the comics and tv series, the "madder he gets..." idea seemed very relatable to me and not exclusive to a comic book reality, so I don't think KJ needed to refer to the comics for that.
