I always hated, when I was a kid, how anything recorded on VHS would deteriorate over time the more you watched it. Plus scratches, and the tape occasionally "eaten" by the VCR, causing irreparable damage.

I haven't seen stand-alone VCRs sold anywhere for a while now, but admittedly haven't been looking for any since mine still presently works. The DVD/VCR combo units I saw at Wal-Mart have no tuner, and pre-digital broadcasting VCR tuners are indeed useless since the switch, an external signal converter being required to enable recording from the television.
